I’m always impressed with DJs who can play a riff on the piano or guitar. There’s a certain level of music affinity that comes from learning how to play an instrument. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it’s necessary for all DJs to learn an instrument to be a great DJ. But, it sure doesn’t do any harm.

Apparently, there’s another really good reason why DJs can benefit from mastering an instrument. That benefit is all about good mental health.

The most obvious connection is that directing a good chunk of your energy into something creative has been proven to reduce anxiety and depression. So, at the end of your gig when you’re coming off a high, get right back to the music. Pick up an instrument, spin a record … it all helps to regulate your mood.

Playing music has benefits that go beyond mental health, too. It can help lower your blood pressure, improve your memory, and stretch your patience.
