So, you’ve just heard that there’s a DJ convention landing in some city not too far away soon. Do you buy your ticket and pack your bags? Apparently, a lot of DJs are saying thanks, but no thanks to conventions.

The question that convention organizers are asking themselves is, why?

For many DJs, the upfront costs of attending a convention once you factor in the cost of the ticket, the cost of a hotel room, food, drinks, transportation, any special event tickets you might also need to shell out for … those costs can really add up and put the whole event out of reach. It leaves DJs questioning whether or not a convention is really worth the cost.

The answer is that the value of attending a convention depends entirely on you.

First, you have to decide if you can afford the upfront costs. Or, if you can, is there a way for you to write off those costs at tax time? If you decide to go to the convention, you need to approach the trip in a super organized way in order to make the most of it.

Start by asking yourself which parts of the convention would benefit you most. Are you in the market for new equipment? Then find out which manufacturers will be there and where their booths will be located. Are you looking to learn new DJing skills? Same thing. Find out who will be offering tutorials and when.

If you focus your time on filling the gaps in your knowledge, then any upfront amount you spend on the convention will be worth it because you’ll turn around and use that information in business and skill improvements.

So, the next time you find out that a DJ convention is scheduled, make an effort to book yourself a spot and indulge in a lot of industry tips that will inevitably benefit you in the long run.
