Steve Lawler’s been DJing for a while. So, listening to his advice is probably a good thing. He wrote a piece recently for MixMag where he revealed his one major complaint about DJs.

He’s sick of DJs thinking they can always get away with playing the Top 10 hits. DJing is so much more than that. It’s knowing your place in the DJ hierarchy if you’re playing a room with other DJs. It’s about knowing how to mix properly. It’s about reading the crowd.

Each of those aspects of DJing can be broken down even further.

His biggest pet peeve is that DJs aren’t being an A&R. For those of you scratching your head right now, A&R stands for Artists and Repertoire. It’s a job within the music industry responsible for finding new talent.

Steve Lawler wants DJs to find and promote new talent. Check out his write-up here.
