Creating music isn’t just about knowing how to play an instrument. I would argue that creating music has very little with how well a person plays an instrument. Look at the whole punk movement in the ’80s. Part of punk was the belief that you didn’t have to know how to play an instrument at all. In fact, the worse you played (or sang) the greater success you might experience.

The key to writing good, original music is to have an understanding of beat, rhythm, melody and what people want to hear. If you’ve got that down, you’re probably good to go. But before you launch into music writing mode, you’ll have to check out a new product by Mixed In Key.

Functional on both Windows and Mac OS X platforms, the Odesi software allows producers to create melodies and edit them on Ableton Live or any other program of choice.
