Ableton has a great app designed for DJs who have little to no previous music education. It’s kind of a quick and dirty dive into music creation that is long overdue. Basically, Ableton as set up a series of buttons with prescribed sounds that you can combine in an endless variety of ways. As you move through the steps, the app teaches you to think about the instruments, beats, and sound nuances in different ways so you can achieve different sounds and effects.

You don’t have to know how to play an instrument or how to read and write musical notes to be a DJ. You do have to have a feel for music.

We’ve written a lot about how DJs should try to expand their knowledge base as much as possible not only in terms of your DJ skills, but also in terms of the music genres you work in and yourself as a business person. It just makes you a better all around DJ. So, learning how to create music might actually improve your DJing ability.
