Some producers spend a lot of time creating remixes and original music that can be streamed by fans. These same producers tend to spend very little time actually DJing gigs. Is it ok to do one and not the other?

For sure. If that’s what you want. But, the best course of action if you’re planning on making a career out of DJing and/or producing is to do both. How much time you spend on either is entirely up to you. But there’s tremendous value to your brand if you engage in both areas.

The producer who never DJs publicly will never develop a feel for reading the crowd. Sure, you might think you don’t care about that anyway if your music is being heard on digital platforms like SoundCloud. But, at some point in time, you’ll need the exposure and the experience that DJing a live show will give you. Not only will you get immediate feedback, you’ll learn how to identify what people want to hear at any given time.
