Well, I suppose it was bound to happen. Jay Z has pulled his entire music catalog from Apple Music and Spotify. If you type his name into the search function, you’ll see music come up where he’s been a collaborator. But, anything exclusively his is gone.

The question is why.

Given that Jay Z owns Tidal, which is a competing music streaming service, the move really isn’t that surprising. Why he’s waited till now is the bigger question for me. Forcing consumers to sign up for Tidal when they want to stream his music might seem like an obvious business decision. You might think that he’ll end up earning more for his work that way … and he just might.

But, in today’s multi platform world, I’m betting that his decision to pull his music from Apple Music and Spotify will end up hurting him. People who stream music don’t want to be told where and when they can get their music. They want to be able to access those tunes in the way that’s best for them.

If whatever issue that sparked this break-up isn’t cleared up, will you sign up to Tidal?
