What would you say is the oldest profession? Hint: it’s not what you think.

When most people think of DJs, they think of ultra cool men and women dedicated to the art of spinning records. These DJs are the life of the party and the background all at the same time. Party-goers don’t often give too much though to the DJ until the moment they begin to judge the party. If the DJ does a great job, party-goers are happy. If the party was boring, it’s the DJ that gets blamed.

But, what about those gigs where the DJ really is background noise? Vice magazine recently published an article on what it’s like to be a DJ at a strip club. Read the article here. The way it’s described in the piece, DJ-ing a strip club can be pure drudgery … except for the steady pay.

DJ-ing at a strip club requires its own skill sets. DJs have to know what kind of music the dancers like so they can put on a show that will entice the men in the audience to spend more money. Ok, so maybe DJ-ing isn’t exactly the oldest profession. But, I would bet that it comes in a close second. Music puts us in the right mood, and DJs are skilled at choosing the right music to put us into that mood.

Well, like it or not, those days of business men negotiating deals in semi-dark rooms full of dancing girls are nearly gone. Opportunities to earn a steady income as a DJ at strip clubs are dying. But, there are other steady gigs out there, like community sports events.

What kind of gig would you have second thoughts about doing?
