Can we, for a moment, give Paris Hilton (and others like her) the benefit of the doubt and assume that she has been a closet DJ her whole life. You know, maybe in between all those parties and movies, she was actually holed up in her room practicing her DJ skills.

No? Well, according to those who’ve heard her output, the chances that she’s been sweating it out behind the decks are pretty slim.

But the fact that Paris can add DJing to her list of accomplishments might say something about the DJ industry itself. Can anyone really be a DJ? If so, is DJing effectively dead?

My position on this is that DJing is not dead. In fact, I’d argue that when we start seeing celebrities getting involved that’s when we can assume our industry has made it. DJing has become cool, acceptable … whatever word you’d like to use to explain its growing popularity. The fact that people will pay good money to go see a DJ perform is proof enough that the industry can withstand the Paris Hilton’s of the world.
