You know when you’re at an event where another DJ is running the show? You just can’t help assess that DJ’s skills, right? Does he redline the mixer? Does she have her head down, eyes focused on her equipment instead of the crowd?

There’s probably a lot you could pick apart – both good and bad. But, what if you think the DJ absolutely sucks. Should you take it upon yourself to enlighten him? Should you approach her and suggest a few techniques that could improve her performance?

My advice is to just let it go. No matter how hard it is to listen to bad DJing, there are limits to how much you should advise others.

The first thing to think about is how you would feel if someone – friend or stranger – pointed out something you were doing poorly. Would your feelings be hurt? Let’s say you go ahead anyway and suggest a way the DJ could improve his performance. And let’s say after listening to you he goes back to doing what he always does. Then what? Then you just let it go. Either he’s not interested in improving his skills. Or, he’s not experienced enough to be able to stay on track of his mistakes.

What do you do when you hear a bad DJ?

Keep these DJ etiquette rules in mind when working alongside others.
