I don’t think I know any DJs who aren’t looking for more work. Or at least, better work. The best gigs pay the best, right? But, the best kind of gig for you might not be the best kind of gig for me.

So, what’s the answer to finding more work? You could get your self-promotion package up-to-date. That would definitely be the place to start. But, there’s something else you could do, too.

You could play a whole lot of gigs that you might not immediately think are your thing. We’ve spent a fair bit of time here at the MMP Blog reminding you of all the different kinds of gigs that are available for you to play – sports arenas, museum functions, retirement home parties. You name it and there’s a possibility that you’ll be asked to play.

Most event and party organizers (or one kind or another) aren’t thinking, “Oh, I can’t hire that DJ because he only plays country music.” If they know you’re a DJ, you might be asked to play the event. It will be up to you to ensure that you’ve got the music to cover their needs.

I’m not saying that you absolutely have to take a gig where the crowd expects you to play music you never play. I am saying that you should absolutely consider it. Spinning tunes outside of your comfort zone helps you grow as a DJ. It also opens up more doors to more gigs. The more opportunities you have to earn money, the better off you’ll be, right?

Over to you: which gigs (outside of your comfort zone) have you worked?
