DJ Dax J got a swift and unpleasant lesson on cultural etiquette recently. He was playing at a popular club in Tunisia when he decided it might be cool to remix a Muslim call to prayer.

Festival revellers were deeply offended. So much so that Dax was sentenced to a year in jail. Lucky for him, he’d already made his way out of the country by the time he was charged. Dax did respond with an apology to the club and to those attending the festival. Everyone seems to have accepted his apology, and everything’s good again.

But, here’s the lesson for you travelling DJs. Find out what’s ok and what’s not ok in the cities and countries you end up working in. A little etiquette and respect go a long way to paving your path to success.
