Most DJs will admit that they’re entertainers first and foremost. There’s no shame in that. DJs provide the conditions that allow people to have a great time. DJs play the right music at the right time, and that draws people together and out onto the dance floor.

The problem, though, is when DJs think that what they do is all about the music. Obviously that’s a big part. But, there’s a change to how the crowd sees DJs that’s putting a kink into that old truism.

It’s not just about the music. It’s also about the DJ as entertainer. You have to get the crowd going with music and your MC talent.

Live bands have done this forever. That’s why Mick Jagger struts across the stage. He understands that what he does on stage is as powerful a tool at getting the crowd dancing as the music itself.

Think about your own performances – might as well call them that because that’s what they are. Are your eyes mostly looking down at your equipment or staring intently at your laptop?

When your eyes aren’t connecting with the crowd, the crowd isn’t connecting with you. Even when you’re doing an amazing job DJing, and everyone’s loving the music and rhythm you’ve set, you’re still missing out on a lot of good vibes if you’re not up front and center with your own performance.

DJing has evolved beyond just playing the right music. People now go to see the DJ as much as they might go see a live band perform. You need to step up and step into that role as consummate entertainer.
