Take a look at your DJ gear. Does it all look basically the same? Except for some differences, like a touchstrip instead of a pad, or a few general design tweaks that don’t affect the function of the gear, every piece you own probably has similar features.

Phil Morse over atΒ Digital DJ Tips noticed that little fact, and is quite happy about it. He argues that it means each brand is standardizing. Sticking to general, industry-wide conventions makes it easier for DJs to use a variety of equipment even if they’ve never seen it before.

Here’s what he noticed:

  • waveforms across systems are colored
  • pads are built in 2×4 layouts
  • sync is showing up on pretty much everything

You can read the rest of his findings here.

The bigger question is whether or not you’ve noticed this trend toward standardizing DJ gear. Do you feel comfortable moving between manufacturers because you know that each piece of equipment you need is going to have a similar looking screen or buttons? Let me know!
