Britain’s Oldest DJ Won’t Stop Spinning
Don Barker, who’s also known as Don Disco, is 80 years old. That bit of information, in and of itself, is no big deal. What is a big deal is that he started DJing in 1977 and is still going strong. When asked if he ever considered retiring, Barker says, “I was going to finish earlier this year, but they asked me to stay. I don’t charge much, I just do it for the love of it” (express.co.uk).
Don Disco even has a following called “the Donettes.” They used to be a group of about 70 people who would follow him around to his gigs. Over the years, though, some have died, leaving about 30. Barker likes to spin the golden oldies, like the Beatles. He’ll even take some requests. For those of you who complain about having to wear earplugs, take note. This guy DJs with hearing aids!
