A camera in the hands of the public is the new eye witness in every kind of event. No matter what is happening, there’s always at least one person who has a camera in hand and is ready to start filming. It’s a phenomenon that’s changed how police do their work. It’s also a phenomenon that changed all our perspectives. You and I might not have attended an event that turned tragic, but we can both view it as if we were there … unfiltered.

Recently, TIME published a citizen’s video or a shooter at a San Diego pool party. You can view it below. The question, though, is whether TIME did the right thing in publishing it for all to see. What do you think? Should news organizations be more careful about which video they choose to share?
