For those of you who like to party into the wee hours of the morning, the push to extend California’s last call hour to 4 am will be good news. It will be great news for DJs who work at those clubs. Instead of having to end your night by 2 am, you might be able to increase your rates and play all night. Clubs that stay open, but stop serving alcohol, after the current 2 am last call, might also see an increase in the crowd that hangs around.

“Might” is the operative word here. None of this has yet been passed into law. There’s also no guarantee that it will be.

But while you wait, consider this. In non-residential areas of Australia, Belgium, China, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, and Japan, there is no last call. You can have a drink at any time at all during the day or night. In most other jurisdictions, the time of last call can vary from midnight to 4 am depending on what the local community can tolerate.

Some people argue that extending the last call will only encourage people to drink too much. What do you think?
