As part of our series aimed at helping you use social media and other marketing tips, I’ve written about Snapchat, Instagram, e-mail, press kits, and lots more.

Today, I wanted to focus attention on Facebook.

Facebook has been around for a long time. Every once in a while we hear about a mass exodus of users, people who (for whatever reason) are moving from Facebook to something else. Regardless of how many Facebook users come and go, that social platform isn’t going to be disappearing any time soon. Now is as good a time as any to learn how to use it to your advantage.

The most important rule of social media is to think very carefully before you post anything. What you say and the photos you upload will live on the internet forever, and will come back to haunt you. If you have a social media account for your business, keep it business-related. Keep your personal exploits off the internet, unless you’re intending on sharing clean and professional thoughts and images from your home life and vacation. That’s ok.

So, now you have a Facebook business account. What do you do with it. Here are my top 3 tips.

  1. Showcase your talents. Whether you’re playing gigs or setting up in your bedroom, record a video of your sets and share them. Keep copyright law in mind. You can name the songs and artists you’re using. But be aware that in some cases, that might not be enough.
  2. Showcase your expert knowledge. You’ve been DJing for a while, and even if you haven’t, you know quite a bit about the business … probably more than you think you know. Host a Q & A via Facebook. If you have enough followers, run a live session and advertise it well. Otherwise, just post questions and answer them. Then encourage your Facebook friends to ask more questions. Answer those … and so on.
  3. Host a guest. You may be the most interesting person in the world. But at some point in time, your Facebook audience is going to start craving a different voice. Invite a DJ friend to do a live jam with you. Or post pics of the two of you, and a conversation that the you can invite friends to contribute to.

Your Facebook audience wants to get to know who you really are. Let your personality shine through. Just look and be yourself.
